Danish Library Number
1. december 2009
The Danish Agency for Libraries and Media is ISIL Registration Agency for Denmark.
The Danish Agency for Libraries and Media also has, according to the international standard ISO 15511 Information and documentation - International Standard Identifier for Libraries and Related Organizations (ISIL), the authorisation to assign internationally valid library codes to Danish libraries.
In practice the valid 6-digits Danish library number is now an ISIL with the preceding country code "DK-" as an international library code.
For public libraries the library number consists of the digit 7 + the 3-digit municipality number + a 2-digit number for branch library. This number is a consecutive numbering of branch libraries. The main library always has 00 as serial number. If more than one mobile library, all of them have their own number.
For school libraries the library number consists of the digit 6 + the 3-digit municipality number + a 2-digit number for the individual school library. A joint institution for the school libraries of a municipality always has 00 as serial number. For research libraries the library number consists of the digit 8 + 4 digits + a 1-digit number for branch library. The main library has always 0 as serial number.
Simultaneously with the implementation of ISIL in Denmark the Danish National Library Authority has stopped assignment of alphabetic library code to research libraries.
A library number assigned by Danish Bibliographic Centre with 5 as a first digit is not an ISIL. These numbers assigned to company libraries and libraries owned by country authorities are used as user codes for the National Union Catalogue. The Danish National Library Authority will later decide how to handle these numbers.
